Canada’s largest Orientation Week takes inclusivity to a new level at Western
The University Students’ Council and Western University will be welcoming over 5,500 incoming students to campus during Canada’s largest Orientation Week. It’s about connecting students to the community that they are going to live in for the next four years. Students are encouraged to learn about new the cultures, experiences and diversity of ideas that they will encounter at University.
For the first time last year, Western included a program entitled the “One Love Rally” which is a series of performances that demonstrate Western’s commitment to our diverse student population. It also highlights the importance of creating an atmosphere where all students feel comfortable expressing themselves on campus. This year’s One Love Rally will feature LGTB activist Lt. Dan Choi and Barenaked Ladies member Steven Page among many other performances.
University Students’ Council President, Adam Fearnall explained that, “Western’s Orientation Week is about more than providing students a safe place to party. At Western, Orientation Week is about welcoming students to their Western and London homes. It’s about introducing students to their community — a community that values empathy, compassion and understanding and provides an environment for students to challenge the status quo, discover new ideas and experience true learning.”
As part of a larger itinerary of events, the One Love Rally aims to broaden the scope of Orientation Week by communicating to students that Western is a place that cares about the individual stories, journeys and experiences of its students. One Love’s power comes from providing an opportunity for students to find themselves in the messages delivered from the stage. One Love is about creating a campus that cares and a campus that believes in the value of making a difference.
Western’s Orientation week will take place from Sunday, September 2 to Saturday, September 8. For more information on Western’s Orientation Week visit www.oweek.ca. A detailed schedule of events will be posted closer to the start of the week.
